ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR – URBAN SUSTAINABLITY AND CONSTRUCTED ECOLOGIES

Job Summary:
The Department of Landscape Architecture (DLA) at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. SUNY ESF is home to a research cluster that supports transdisciplinary innovations in Urban Sustainability. The successful candidate for this position will become a member of the DLA faculty and also participate in this interdisciplinary initiative. We are seeking a new colleague whose scholarship can contribute to, and be enriched by, the College’s unique environmental science mission. Relevant areas of expertise include specializations like climate-adaptive design, urban ecological design and forestry, landscape performance, and design with plants, soils, and landscape materials. We are especially interested in candidates whose work uses an urban sustainability lens to examine and understand implications of systems-based interventions in landscape architectural practice, site design, and the ecology of the built environment.

Our department is home to two accredited landscape architecture programs (Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture). The successful candidate for this position is expected to teach courses in the professional curricula, especially courses such as landscape construction or others in the ecology and technology sequence, and studio courses. Our faculty also mentor students in the Master of Science in Landscape Architecture program and the collegewide Graduate Program in Environmental Science (M.S. and Ph.D.).

Landscape Architecture at SUNY ESF is on a growth trajectory, and we are eager to welcome a new colleague at this pivotal time. In addition to rapidly growing enrollment, our historic home, Marshall Hall, recently underwent a multi-year renovation; the impressive facilities demonstrate the commitment of the College to the success of Landscape Architecture. The College owns 25,000 acres of land across New York State, a tremendous asset that is available to DLA faculty. We are in the process of developing a Landscape Lab on nearby College property. Beyond ESF, there is potential for collaborations with Syracuse University (SU), Upstate Medical University, and other institutions in the region and beyond.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have the potential to develop, or show evidence of, a robust, extramurally funded research program, excellence in teaching, and service to the college and discipline. The new faculty member will play a prominent role in the delivery of our core curriculum and must demonstrate a strong interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. We employ team-taught studios with an emphasis on learning in a supportive environment. The ability to establish collaborative and collegial working relationships is required, as is an ability and interest in teaching design studios. Additional responsibilities include participation in our Off Campus undergraduate capstone program and in online course development and instruction. We are particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

Required Qualifications:
- A terminal degree in Landscape Architecture or a related discipline by the date of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- A strong record of research/scholarly productivity and previous teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
