Assistant Professor of Planning, Landscape Architecture and Design - Ranked Renewable Term

University of Oklahoma

The Division of Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Design (PLAD) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) seeks a practice-oriented Assistant Teaching Professor for a multi-year, 9-month Rank-Renewable (non-tenure) position. This is an exciting opportunity for a skillful teacher to work with communities and students on applied community planning and design projects to improve local quality of life.

This practice-oriented instructor will have two roles: 1) They will teach 4 to 6 courses per academic year in our undergraduate Environmental Design (EnD) program; 2) In addition to the teaching load, this position will make professional project-based contributions to the work of the Institute for Quality Communities (IQC). The position is intended to have a flexible balance between the two roles based on the project needs of the IQC and instructional needs of EnD in a given academic year, potentially varying from 40% teaching/60% project work to 60% teaching/40% project work.

Our EnD program trains students in collaborative community-minded development of the natural and built environments. The curriculum focuses on broad exposure to professional skills across the Gibbs College of Architecture with meaningful connections to PLAD’s graduate programs in planning, landscape architecture, and urban design. The EnD curriculum emphasizes real world project-based learning that brings the important work of the IQC into the classroom.

The IQC was established by the University of Oklahoma as the Gibbs College community outreach arm. Its mission is to enhance local quality of life in communities throughout the state through community engagement, economic and community development visioning, historic preservation, placemaking, and urban design projects. Since 2008, IQC has contributed through award-winning work with dozens of communities across the state and hundreds or students on these vital issues.
