(2) Assistant Professor Positions in Architecture and Urban Design (9-Month tenure-Track/Tenured Faculty)

The David R. Ravin School of Architecture (SoA) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for two (2) full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Architecture and Urban Design. Successful candidates will teach primarily in the Master of Urban Design program in addition to the Architecture programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Successful candidates' work should synthesize contemporary issues and design practice as critical modes of inquiry at multiple scales. Their work should demonstrate how design can engage the complex ecologies of cities, addressing critical urban issues such as climate change, adaptive infrastructures, and community resilience. Candidates are expected to employ innovative methods – such as computational, data-based, and/or participatory processes – that expand the ways we understand and shape urban environments. Candidates should approach the urban as a global condition and demonstrate familiarity with a diverse array of urban design, architectural design, and research methods. Strong applicants will have experience teaching design studios, a record of relevant and transdisciplinary research or practice, a commitment to design as a critical tool for shaping urban conditions, and an ability to address general education coursework when needed. Candidates whose work bridges research and practice are especially encouraged to apply.

An advanced degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design or a related discipline is required for both positions. Professional licensure is required. Experience in professional practice and academic environments is desirable, particularly where these have interconnected and overlapped.

The SoA offers four degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, Master of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture, and Master of Urban Design, as well as dual-degree programs in Architecture + Urban Design and Architecture + Computer Science. The 12-month Master of Urban Design program attracts students from a wide range of locations and backgrounds. With the City of Charlotte as a living laboratory and an innovative international summer program, this degree offers unique opportunities for engaged teaching and research as well as public impact.

The SoA is committed to a culturally and intellectually diverse environment that supports a broad range of opportunities for scholarly work.
