The College of Arts and Architecture at Pennsylvania State University seeks a visionary and creative leader as its next Director of the Stuckeman School— a unit comprised of the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Graphic Design. We are interested in a dynamic individual with experience promoting and fostering research, creative activity, professional preparation, outreach, and community engagement.

The successful candidate will hold a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in one of the disciplinary units within the Stuckeman School. This full-time, 48-week administrative position will report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture.

The College of Arts and Architecture is working to establish a culture of anti-racism and anti-oppression that embraces individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity through curricula, values, standards, ideals, policies and practices. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of their experience with, and interest in, contributing to these goals.

Responsibilities:
• The School Director is responsible for operational leadership, strategic planning, fostering research and creative activity within the school, and external networking and outreach initiatives. Additionally, the Director manages an annual budget of approximately $1.3M, and administration of the Stuckeman School endowments along with several additional endowment accounts in consultation with school leadership and the dean. These endowments support the development of faculty research, scholarship, and creative work. They also support collaborative and multi-disciplinary design and professional initiatives in the departments and with other institutions and faculty. The school director is expected to foster collaborative and cross-disciplinary opportunities.
• The School Director’s responsibilities are allied to supporting the research centers—Stuckeman Center for Design Computing, Hamer Center for Community Design—faculty research, creative activity, and multi-disciplinary faculty teaching and research efforts, and the role of graduate students and collaborators in research, scholarship, and creative work. In this role, the school director also engages with the College’s Associate Dean for Research, Creative Activity, and Graduate Programs, and with University-level initiatives for research and faculty development (such as co-hires with the University’s interdisciplinary institutes and research centers). The school director does not directly oversee the academic mission of the departments, as these responsibilities belong to the department heads.
• The School Director is tasked with outreach to both internal and external constituents. Internally, the director is responsible for all school operations including staffing, facilities, and information technology. Externally, the school director coordinates an external advisory council—the Stuckeman Advisory Council, comprised of noted practitioners, academics, industry experts, and alumni—who report to the school director and the dean. The school director also connects quarterly with the Alumni Program Groups for each department in the school, coordinates the annual Stuckeman Career Day, and oversees regular professional development programming led by the Stuckeman Career advisor.
• The School Director oversees the physical and financial resources that established the school, and the continued impact these resources have on developing and maintaining a leading school of design.

Required Qualifications:
• Terminal degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Graphic Design (PhD, M.Arch., MFA, MLA). PhD or terminal degree with equivalent experience preferred.
• Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice regarding 21st-century curricula development, inclusive practices in developing diverse student bodies, staff, and faculty membership, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
• Experience leading and supervising administrative, technical, and/or advising staff, preferably in academic settings.
• Evidence of and strategic vision for fostering and mentoring research, design, and/or creative practice centers/initiatives.
• A clear vision for and significant experience in advancing art and design practices, research, and collaborations to advance professional practice and research. Leadership through strategic support for faculty research, scholarship, and creative work
• Experience engaging professional organizations, external funding agencies, non-governmental organizations and foundations

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with leadership, strategic planning and management of endowments and funding accounts.
• Management and planning of art and design facilities
• Experience identifying and cultivating strategic engagement with college and university-wide research initiatives
• Experience working with an external advisory council comprised of practitioners, academics, external industry experts, and alumni
• Participation and engagement with external associations, groups, and organizations

The Stuckeman School:
Cal and Eleanor R. Stuckeman established an endowment in 2008 to enable the School to be a leader among peer institutions in the design disciplines. The Stuckeman School provides shared administrative support to the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Graphic Design, and maintains digital and analog fabrication shops and technology resources across a state-of-the-art LEED facility. The endowments in the Stuckeman School include several Chairs and Professorships for full professors, as well as a Career Development Professor in Design for early-career faculty. Two large grant programs provide early- or mid-career faculty members significant opportunities for professional development. The endowments provide generous funding for faculty research, faculty travel, visiting critics, lectures and exhibitions, research assistants, and course enhancement funds. The school’s endowments also support two active research centers: the Hamer Center for Community Design and the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing, and Ecology + Design, a research initiative.
